Charles Lancaster, London.  Very fine early breech loading double rifle in .450 BPE made in 1870. Weight 8 ¾ lbs.  Superb 28” damascus steel barrels with brilliant bores retain much of the original rich brown finish.  The left barrel is engraved with the maker’s name and address while the right barrel is engraved “Patent Breech Loading Smooth Bored Rifle”.  The action of this fine rifle is a modified Jones screw-grip action in which the barrels slide forward off the breech face before dropping down for loading of the cartridge. Action and non-rebounding hammer side locks are mechanically crisp as the day the were made and retain traces of the original color hardening showing no significant use. Bushed firing pins and extractors. Overall mechanically perfect, very tight, and a very nice rifle for the money.
